Information please. I am building a computer based workstation from scratch. I am considering a digital mixer, a moto 2408, a powermac, and some software that I haven't decided on. I want to use the mixer for tracking and then use it as a control surface for mixing on the computer.

As you know, Logic is a good choice. You can use the VST Generic Remote template for Cubase and Nuendo as well. HUi emulation is coming soon (hopefully), which should cover Pro Tools and Digital Performer. If you're feeling adventurous enough, you could probably get it to work with just about anything to some extent...it's just MIDI information...
I was curious if the midi messages could be edited to conform to the software. I'm considering Logic and Digital Performer so it sounds like the DM-24 would be a good fit.

Yeah, it should work for either...Tascam just announced that software version 2.01 has finally been posted, which includes (among other things) HUi emulation, which will make working with Digital Performer a breeze.
Which one is a better choice? I want to use it for audio and to control Logic on my G4. I was told the Roland is a little confusing but sounds better.....Please enlighten me.

What exactly are you going to do with it? What kind of tracking and mixing sessions to you figure you'll encounter? Either may be a better choice depending on what you're doing.
One thing I can say for sure is that there's not likely a better value for the money in terms of digital mixers than the VM7100 system right now...
What I didn't like about the Roland is that you have to go through a converter to get to TDIF or ADAT. I want to interface to the MOTU 2408. Did I read correctly?

Yes, you do need to add a VM24E expansion board with gives you three RBUS connectors, and then you need a DIFAT for each 8 channels of digital I/O you need (it provides both TDIF and ADAT). So the cost would wind up being a little more than the $999 the basic system itself goes for, but if you want 24 channels it would only run about $2100...still a bit less than the DM24.
Again, not that I'm saying it's necessarily a better board, just that it is a good choice at a reasonable price.
I plan on mixing 32 tracks....use the mixer for EQ and Comp. and use my G4 with Logic for all of the plugins....then mix down to the computer. Is this possible with the Tascam? I also need a new sound card (any suggestions?)
