Creation Station and Digidesign Rack 003

I have just received a new Creation Station and a Digidesign 003 and I am wondering how I set it up to use the Rack 003 as my sound card. I have my monitors hooked up to the 003. When I am not using Protools I want to be able to listen to the music files on my PC through my monitors. Can this be done?

    Thanks

make sure the Digidesign wavedriver software gets loaded when you install ProTools. Do not enable on-motherboard audio. Then, you should be able to select the 003 in the Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel.

You can't run the wavedriver with, for example, WMP, WinAmp, etc at the same time as ProTools, though

You can hook your sound card to the alt source input on your pt 003.Than all you have to do is turn on alt source to monitors.

Thanks for your replies. I just realized that the output from the Creation Station is routed to input on channels 1 and 2 on the Rack 003 in the Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel. So when I want to listen to it without protools, I need to have the monitors or other speakers hooked up to the outputs of Chanel 1 and 2 on the rack. Right now I use the SP/DIF straight into the monitors. I am using Roland DS-50A monitors. I was hoping there was a setting somewhere that I could point the Audio Devices to output through SP/DIF as well. Maybe I just don't see that setting though (or perhaps it can't be done that way).??

It's can't be done through the 003 S/PDIF output. DSigidesign writes their standard Windows drivers to be very limited, so what you are getting now is all you can expect. Bed Rock has a good idea; you can use a Y cable fromt he CS output into the Aux inputs on the 003. Then, you can route everything from the CS through the 003, even things like QuickTime that aren't really compatible with the 003's drivers.

Would I have to enable the onboard sound card if so? I understand that it's not really desirable to do that if working with Protools.

On newer models, the built-in card already is enabled, and no, there are not conflicts. Pro Tools will not even acknowledge its existence, so don't worry about it.

Thanks Matt. I Sincerely appreciate the help! (now if I can only get that front fan to stop making so much noise! )

It's the CS+ Rack - brand new. 1 week old. It's not a rattling noise from metal or plastic from the fan, it's the noise from the speed of the fan itself. It stays on all of the time. Even when I just turn it on when it's cold. I don't have anything blocking the air passage in front or back.

It's not officially sanctioned by our builders, but you can unplug that fan. You will need to monitor heat through the PC Probe (Start > All Programs > Asus > PC Probe) and make sure you don't go above warning levels for motherboard or processor heat. If you do, then you'll need to plug the fan back in. Again, proceed at your own risk on this, but it will help reduce the whirr.
