    Compact Tube Amp?

    Hey all,

I have a Line 6 Spider II half stack. I am looking to get a good quality, inexpensive (up to 600 or so) tube amp combo so that I can play at smaller gigs without having to bring my half stack.

I play in a rock/alternative band, and I usually play a Standard SG.

    any suggestions?

If you are a fan of line 6, maybe go check out their new spider III series, it has tubes in it plus modeling and efx, might make a great backup. I have heard mixed reviews on it, and havnt tried one out myself yet.

maybe look into a Vox Ac 15 or something too

I recently got the SpiderValve 1x12 and I'm very pleased with it. It's a LOUD 40 watts and sounds great. All the models are much more accurate by incorporating the tubes.

Well, we're back to new versus used.
For new, there is a host of amps, all depending on which ones you play and decide on.
For used, it gets more narrow as many amps don't have the following some amps do, and which ones are available in your area. Look at Harmony-central and read some of the reviews, for both new and used.
For smaller gigs, I use my Peavey Classic20 and my Peavey Bravo (yes, they are both Peavey, it just turned out that way). Both have sounds that are unobtainable by any other amp and the Bravo is more versatile than just about anything (with the right tubes and speaker).
Before you buy, no matter what you selttle on, BE SURE, you play it with YOUR guitar first, otherwise, you will hate yourself in the morning.......

    Have fun shopping............

Not a guitar player, but I am picky as hell about guitar tone, and I play in a modern rock band with a guy running one of these with several pedals (uses a Fulltone OCD for overdrive), sounds great. You want tubes, get tubes top-to-bottom. A half-century of guitar players can't be wrong.

If you can stomach the Peavey name, those Classic 20's and Classic 30's make some VERY compelling sounds for not too much money- they're kind of Peavey's take on the Hot Rod and the Blues Jr.

That is one on the reasons the Peavey Bravo is so popular. Some guys on the forums reporting owning ten of the things. I had two, but now have one. I sprayed the Peavey logo flat black. Still, it looks like the cheapo solid state Peavey, until you turn it on. It was the first of the "ultra" amps, that is all tube with an extra 30db boost (the ultra) should you need it.
The EL84's give it that American dirty rock sound. For under $300, it can't be beat. Read the reviews on Harmony Central.

Do you want the amp itself to produce overdrive/distortion,
or will you be using pedals for that? If pedals, what do you
have? When you play "smaller" gigs, is the drumkit miked?

Sadly Sweetwater doesn't sell it, but I've always found the B-52 AT series to be a fantastic value. It's hard to beat them at that price. You can get the 2x12 for $800 new I believe. Great amp.
