Back when Tobias basses were really made by Mr. Tobias their website had some pretty in-depth explanations of how the different available body woods (both core & top/back caps) affected tone...not sure if they still have anything like that (or if the company still even exists). Stands to reason the MTD website might offer a similar guide.
Also check out Alembic's website.
yeah, I concur with Ed... I spoke to Mr. Tobias at NAMM one year and was completely impressed with his arcane knowledge of woods for basses. astounding amounts of knowledge.![]()

Over the years I've owned most of the basses mentioned previously in this post. At one point I owned a 12 string "Grand Stick" from Emmet Chapman made of walnut and purple heart. I commisioned a custom built walnut/purple heart 7 string fretless traditional bass (not stick) from a custom builder, and was totaly impressed with the sound.... It had the thickest hunk of ebony for a fingerboard I'd ever seen. This bass had Jonh Pettitucci bottom with Stanly Clark top. One of the finest basses i ever owned.

I made a Bass body out of box elder once that sounded very nice.
