12 to 18 inches from between fret twelve and sound hole on the acoustic guitar . then move it around til you like the sound . having a very good mike and mike pre helps tremendously , and make sure you are using a hopefully great sounding acoustic guitar . i used a neuman m49 tube with a brent averill pre on a martin d 28 and got very good results , but there are lots of great combinations .

What kinds of mics are you using? The best one I've found for flute is the Aungles Flute Microphone. It has an amazing sound on it.
