Hi there!

Is there a way to rearrange a song without cutting and copying the audio files?
I mean, it could be useful to make the cursor play different selections of the song in a "random" way, like the playlist in winamp, where I can decide the order of the songs played.

Is this possible in pro tools? How do Proīs change a song structure?

Any answer could be useful!

Thanks

Take a look at Sony Acid Pro (check out a free copy at www.acidplanet.com) or a really great loop creation tool is Ableton Live
http://www.ableton.com/

A direct answer to your question is sure you can use beat detective and various other looping feature of pro tools to do some amazing cuts.. Specifically I haven't tried to do what your mentioning but I understand what your trying to do. I am not sure I know why you are trying to do it, but I at least know what you want lol. Experiment a little! Good Luck!

YES! I do this in Ableton Live plugin inside of ProTools! It's an awesome feature, called 'random triggering of clips'. Do you have the Ableton Live plugin for ProTools? Are you TDM or LE?

I ment, when I wrote "random" like I can decide where the cursor plays on the timeline and jumps from one selection to another so I can play back a new structure without cut and copy and paste.

A friend of mine (a professional pro tools operator) told me meanwhile that there is no way to make the cursor "jumping arround" in the session, playing something on 00:20:00 and then 01:01:15 and the going back on 00:04:01 for example.

So the only way I discovered to manage around my problem is to manually click on a different memory location after another one has finished to play. I thought that this could be automated. This is called "playlist" in other progs.

Thanks anyway and have a nice day!

OK! You can do this in playlists in ProTools, although it will be a time-consuming setup to get there... If you have a ph#, I'm glad to call you (and maybe have our Digi rep as a conference call) and suss it out. Probably it will be too painful for you, it is do able..

Yes I have a phone, but I think thats not gonna be working becouse I live in austria (high bills)...but I use skype for quite a while now and this is working fine.

What do you mean with "Ableton Live plugin" ?
Do you mean the full version that creates a plugin for rewire in pro tools? ..or is that a special plug-in only?

And..if its a full version, does this work with a lite version too?

I use the m-powered version of pro tools le, which I find much better than the m-box version, which I previously owned. I mean the performance is much better on the m-audio hardware (delta 1010) so I can play and record guitar for examle with effects in real-time. On the mbox I only got a heavily delayed audio signal from pro tools, so I had to "direct monitor" the signal (without any effects). I am so happy with that m-audio bundle- I had to describe that!

My skype name is captainhanky. I think I am starting to get online on skype at arround 2000 cest (Central European Summer Time) that is I think 1400 on your time (my time minus 6 hours), if you want to give me a call. Or I can skype you. Just need your skype-name.

I am very interested in your setup working with pro tools playlists.

Ok! Sorry I'm not skype-saavy! The Ableton Live software tricks will work on both the full version and the LE-bundled LiveAdapted. You probably already know this - there's a demo for free download on the Ableton.com site. Also there's some very cool videos to see Live in action on the site, some of which deals with the triggering of clips and arrangements that you are asking about. You should check it out, the arranging page is very cool and might work for your needs.

Sorry, I meant Ableton Live Digidesign Edition, the Adapted tag is for the ReasonAdapted that comes with an LE system....

Something else you may want to check out is Synchronic, which is a looping application that runs as a plug in inside of ProTools. Among other things, it will let you load in a number of audio segments and trigger them in real time, which seems like what you are looking for. You can download a demo of it from:

Thanks for the link.

Synchronic seems to be a kind of a dj tool where you can mix 2 different samples with a crossfader. You can slice this samples and use plug-in instances on every track. But you have to import the samples manually.

Itīs not possible, as far as I can see that you remix your existing pro tools session (with many audio tracks in it).

But itīs worth a try, not only because of the real funny demo songs (ha ha).

I'm not in front of my system right now, but if I recall, you can assign 8 or 10 pieces of audio, which can be whole segments of the song, to buttons that can be triggered in any order in real time. You would have to bounce the segments down to stereo files first to import them, however. Check it out - it may do what you are looking for.
