Have a Dell pentium III 600 with 128MB RAM.
Wondering if this would be a good portable setup:
Tascam USB428
Sonar
10 GB hard drive (advice on RPM and seek times)
Thanks,
James

What you describe should work pretty well, but how is the hard drive hooked up? Firewire is OK, but USB is worthless for this.

It would be firewire. Talked to someone at Sweetwater today and they recommended the Glyph firewire drives.

The Glyph recommendation is good, but I'm wondering about the viability of a laptop for doing audio. Are you planning on it being an editing station primarily? I can't imagine recording a band on a laptop without hauling my favorite tracking monitors, at least a good pre or two, etc. I can't imagine mixing without good monitors and I definitely can't imagine mixing with a laptop whirring in my ear. I would think long and hard about how viable this type of situation is and whether it really is a solution. Hope this makes sense, just another outside perspective.
