Dynaudio BM6:) They run about $850 a pair, so with a power amp you would be a little over your budget, but in my opinion WELL worth spending a little bit more. You could do a nice Dyanudio BM^ and Hafler amp combo for around $1200.

I haven't heard the BM6's myself, but assuming they sound better than the BM5's (as you'd expect them to considering the price difference) I'd say that sounds like a great idea. If you're looking for a pair of powered monitors, then I'd happily recommend the BM5A's to you. I just heard them for the first time when we were out doing our Digidesign roadshows in Ohio a couple weeks back, and I was very surprised when I realized it was the "cheap" Dynaudio speakers were were listening to. The imaging was phenomenal and they seemed to have no problem filling up the rooms we were using (which were mid-sized banquet rooms..much larger than any control room I've ever been in).

Tannoy System 800 or Truth Audio TA-1P would be two other contenders.
