I have always worked with softsynths, so this may be a lame-o newbie question to most of you, but here it goes:

I created 3 midi sequences, a drum part, a piano part and a bass part in Cubase, with each sounding via MIDI on an external sound module (Roland JV 1010).

Is there a standard way to record these sequences (as individual tracks) as audio back into Cubase? How much latency will i get?

How about the same scenario invoving a standalone wavtable synth (Emu soundcard) instead of a JV 1010. Can i treat the Wavtable synth like a softsynth even though it is not a VSTi softsynth?
How does that work?

If I want to add some vocals should i create the audi files from the Synth module first and then overdub the vocals?

Thanks for all and any help. I am truly grateful to all the contributers to the forum as i have learned so much!

i'll try and ask the question differently:

You experienced engineers, is there a standard way that you use to record hardware synthesizers? What is the best way to do that from sequenced midi tracks?
Thank you.

I don't record keyboard tracks to multitrack audio. I just sync the sequencer with recorded vocals or recorded real instruments and record that to the master (mixed down to stereo). This way I have more tracks, can change voicings, rhythms, keyboard mixes, etc. after I've listened to it a while.

I do that too. I would run the MIDI to the keys, and then connect the soundcard outputs and the keyboard audio outputs to an external MIXER. Do the mixdown on the external mixer. Then you have three choices on what to do with the mix:

1. Run it to a compressor/limiter and then an audio CDR burner.

2. Run it to another PC and record it there.

3. Record it on your PC to two tracks which are NOT in the mix (treat as an external bounce). Since it is the mixdown, latency is not important, as it does not have to sync with the other tracks.
