Hello all!! I am about to build my family a new comp for CHRISTmas. Here's what I'm basically looking at:

Atlon XP1600+
Epox 8KHA
256 Micron DDR
20GB Maxtor 7200 (for now, we're on a really tight budget, maybe a second HDD later...)

Does anyone know of any major problems I would have with this? I know there are many other variables, but this is basically what I plan on getting. I will be running pro tools free and will probably sell my Tascam 424 MkIII for a good sound card, although I'm not positive that I want to just yet because it has been known to come in really handy in certain situations, so still debating there. I have heard rumors that the XP series of Athlons is more "friendly" with the DAW community. Anyone know of any truth to that? I am really excited about this new machine. If anyone could please give me some general feedback it would be really appreciated. I haven't ordered it yet, so things can still be changed!!! Although, I will mention I'd prefer not to go with a PIII because I'm not POSITIVE that my parents are going to let me use this new comp. for recording as much as I'd like and I really want the horsepower of the XP1600 for games.

what OS are you running?

you will Def. need a bigger hard drive as well as a good sound card.

also, at least 512 PC133 or higher (depending on what mobo you have)

from there...you should be ok

Hey man!! I can see how long it's been since I posted that... heh. I all ready have the comp and it's up and running!! I got the following:

Athlon XP1600
256MB of DDR
Standard sound card (for now... possibly Omni Studio or C-port in the future)
Voodoo2 on graphics (for now... it works and I just traded a networking card for it... heh)

I've downloaded Pro Tools free and plan to use it for what I do. I won't be doing much... I don't have the time nor the money. I wish I could, but maybe later. Thanks for your reply, though. Later!!

in Christ Jesus,

Brandon

OH yeah, as far as HDD's go... I've got a 30 gig Maxtor with my games and audio on it and a 2 gig with my OS and basics on it...

Do you have the parts already? I would call sweetwater on which chip company to use. I've read bad things about certain chip companies which don't work with some recording programs. I've got Pentium III in mine and have absolutely no problems.

Hey man! Unfortunately, it's too late. I've all ready got it. I've got a VIA chipset, of which I believe may be one of the more problematic. It's an Abit KG7 MoBo. Does anyone know how well VIA's chipset's work with home recording in general? So far I've been able to record a little bit from the 424 to my sound card in stereo. Works well that way, but that's not even close to 8 simultaneous tracks via a C-port or something. heh. Anyways, anyone know?

in Christ Jesus,

Brandon
