Hey everyone, my name is Matt, I'm 17, and a junior in high school. I own a Digidesign 001 system with Pro Tools LE.
I had a question about the tempo/beat counter in the transport. Is there a way for pro tools to produce a click or rhythm to sync tracking to the internal tempo/beat count? The manual only briefly says something about MIDI usage for this, but i'm clueless about MIDI. Until now I have just recorded a click from a line in metranome. Thanks so much! ~Matt

u can send MTC out a midi port to a keyboard or something with a click in it...then run the audio data into PT or however you get to your cans...(headphones)...there's a set-up for this in the metronome window...click the pendelum looking thing and it will pop up....select the output...what sound..and level adjustments.

PT 6.4 has a click built in (HD does...I think LE does too)...might wanna see if you can upgrade...

thanks, i never really understood how that worked.

You said that PT 6.4 has a built-in click? I have 6.4 and couldn't find anything....well i'll take another look and try the MIDI approach, thanks for the help! ~Matt

should be a plug-in called "click" or something like that....

You gotta insert it on an audio track to hear it......or an aux track.....

again I'm not sure about LE though....

got it! I didn't even realize that when I upgraded; thanks!

Also, one more question, if you don't mind. Right now i'm recording strictly in the box, which means two tracks at a time using the 001 preamps.

I've been thinking about purchasing a mackie onyx board. There I could have preamps for the rest of the channels, and a talkback section etc.

The problem is that the onyx dosen't have direct outs, only inserts and a DB-25 analog multitrack out, which the 001 dosen't support. Could I use the inserts as direct outs? If possible, what cable should i use, balanced or unbalanced?

The use of a board would significantly improve the ease of recording, since i could use talkback, have several easily switchable speakers sets and have my computer's soundcard through the board. Thanks for your help! ~Matt

The inserts on older Mackie boards work as direct outs if you insert a mono (tip/sleeve) cable one click into the jack (not all the way in). I would assume that this would be true for the new ones.

thats an interesting way...might look kinda funny, but whatever works, eh?

Actually I found a ProCo DB-25 to 1/4" TRS snake online last night, so I think I'm set.

Thanks for the help, this is always such a great resource! ~Matt

Why would you want to use the inserts/direct outs?

Why not the master outs?

master outs would just be a stereo mix; i would want a line for each channel going into the digi001. So for drums I would have 6 mics into the board, and direct outs for each channel going into the digi for a multitrack recording. The board is really used just for its preamps and master section.

oh yeah...for some reason I was thinking M-box....

ha......

dunce cap for me:)

Best way to hook this up.....is to use a TRS plug...and only use the tip and sleeve..solder the ring wire to the sleeve...disconnecting it from the ring....other end would get plugged into the 001 like normal.

label any cables you might make, so that you will know in the future what they are, or were for.
