I currently run SONAR3 and I have a M-Audio Omni interface; I am considering upgrading to a Athlon 64bit processor-has anyone heard if there are any problems running SONAR3 and the Omni interface on a 64bit system? Does XP still have problems running on a 64bit system with SP2?

I have had absolutely no problems with XP or my AMD 64 bit processor. Running stable, cool, and really fast for about 6 months or so now.

What is the biggest difference between the Opteron and the Athlon 64bit processors?

Xstatic, are you using service pack 2?

I may be out of date on this, but I'm pretty sure the Opteron is a 64-bit server processor and the Athlon 64's are for the home/office machines.

You're going to find the server processors are geared more toward distributed number crunching for the types of jobs web and file servers normally handle. They may also be specialized for some of the weird environmental parameters of life in a server rack instead of a standard home / tower case. (multiple processors, heat issues, motherboard specs and layout differences)

O.k., that makes more since now-I think that someone recommended the Opteron if I wanted to run dual processors!

Ok, I found some info on the various current AMD lines via the Wikipedia.

Looks like each current processor "family" can be easily seperated by the motherboard socket format they use.

754: The Athlon 64 value/budget line, 64-bit memory interface

939: Athlon 64 performance line and newer Athlon 64 FXs, 128-bit memory interface

940: Opteron and old Athlon 64 FX, 128-bit memory interface - Require registered DDR, but can use ECC

It looks like the Opteron's have some extra features that are used to optimize them for servers and to route processes from various sources.

The Athlon 64's have a throttling feature that lets the processor run at a lower temperature and voltage load when it's handling non-demanding processes like web surfing or office applications.
