I have been recording for a little over a year now with a VS2400 that is very nice but I am looking to move to a computer based system with protools. I have been looking at the 002r but was wondering how many simultaneous inputs I can utilize in a single session. I have a presonus DigiMax 8 channel preamp that I would like to use with the 002r. I have heard that you can run it through the ADAT optical in on the 002r but would like to know for sure before I invest in the 002r. Also might there be a bottle neck through the firewire caused by the number of simultaneous inputs I use? (for reference I would like to use this setup to record live shows or bands with 12-16 inputs)

THis has been covered in some where here in the last month or two. If you do a search you will find the answer. I don't own one so I don't remember. I would give you what I think I remember but then you would read it, buy it, I would have been wrong, and then you whould be hunting me down for your money back.:D Seriously, if no one else answers soon, just do a search and you will find it.

18, if I remember correctly. 8 analog (4 mic preamps), 8 ADAT, stereo S/PDIF.

The ADAT inputs can be interfaced with one of the numerous 8-channel mic pre lightpipe interfaces. Your DigiMax will work fine for this.

Add 4 other mic preamps on the non-mic pre analog channels, and you have 16 mic preamps. Add something that will interface to S/PDIF, and you have 18. But you can get 12 mic preamps with just the DigiMax and the 002, along with 4 other analog ins.

Yup. I just tracked a drummer in his home using my 002R, a Digimax )via ADAT) and my 400 Mhz Titanium G4 Powerbook. I used all 12 mic inputs without any problems, but for the fun of it I added a 13th to see what would happen... Processor maxed out (Poor 400 Mhz machine).:D

Yup, you're more likely to top out your processor than the FW bus. A hearty processor will get you all 18 input channels, plus some plugins if you absolutely have to have them. But the more you tax the system, the more latency you may incur. http://duc.digidesign.com is where all the ProToolers go and shhare their gripes and triumphs. Way more info there. Some of the Sweetwater reps are pretty heavy on Digi stuff, too.
