I need a cable that runs from a 1/4" TRS balanced out to a XLR balanced in. Can I just convert a standard mic cable by cutting off one of the XLR ends and soldering back on a TRS male? If so, any standard way to connect the leads? Does anyone make a cable or adapter like this?

As far as I know the industry standard for soldering cables is that the XLR cable should have : Hot to Pin 2, Cold to Pin 3, Ground to Pin 1, for a TRS connector the Tip is hot, Ring is cold, and the Sleeve is ground.
Unfortunately there is no real "standard" for whether pin 2 or pin 3 is hot. The majority of equipment used to be pin 3 hot, however, these days most things are pin 2 hot (hot is always the tip of your TRS). There are still some boxes floating around that do use pin 3 as the hot though (Summit DCL 200 is one example). Soem European brands still use pin 3 as well. You need to find out for sure what yours is before you build the cable.

How about using a 600 ohm transformer with centertap to make the conversion?
