Sorry, but it's not possible to use 2 Digi002's at the same time on the same machine. You can use all 18 inputs on a single unit simultaneously, and if you need more faders and have the 002 Rack, you can get a control surface with more faders.

You basically need A/D converters, and the typical thing to do would be to get an 8 channel box that has digital outs on lightpipe, such as the Presonus DigimaxLT - http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DigimaxLT/ or the Focusrite Octopre with the optional ADAT card - http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/OctoPre/

thanks for the quick responses. So if i add the 8 channel box that will give an addational 8 mic/line inputs so i could simultanously record 16 different things correct. Can i add 2 8 channel boxes now being able to use 24inputs simultanously and would the M-Audio Octane or even the DigiDesign Pre be 8 channel bozes that i can uses
thanks reuben

The Digi002 tops out at 18 inputs. If you add one of the 8 channel boxes that output on ADAT lightpipe, you can get 2 additional inputs on SPDIF. You would have to make sure that whatever converter you got had a word clock connection on it, so you could sync it to the 8 channel converter, otherwise you'll probably have a lot of problems.

hey
i must be being a pest but i am farely new to the recording industry and i am trying to update and redo my home studio so hears another question.
can i use the ADAT Lightpipe and the SPDIF all at the Same Time
and if so
does the focusrite voicemaster pro have the SPDIF out put to hook up to the DIGI 002
and
can i use plugins on the ADAT and SPDIF items
thanks once again

Don't feel bad about asking questions. When I was learning all this stuff, I wish there would have been a resource like this forum - it could have made my life a lot easier, and I could have avoided some of the mistakes I made.
The Octane would serve the same purpose as the Digimax or Octopre, and if you got a VoicemasterPro with its optional digital card, you can use that SPDIF output along with the 8 channels of outputs on ADAT plus the 8 channels on the Digi002 itself for a total of 18 inputs.
As for plug ins, they are applied within the software, so yes, you can apply plug ins on all the inputs, if your computer has the processing power to do so. In practice, you will probably want to record largely without plug ins on the tracks, and apply them later, on mixdown. Since the Digi002 lets you have 32 playback tracks, on mixdown, you can apply plug ins on all 32 tracks, again if your computer is powerful enough to do so.

If I remember correctly, you cannot use 2 command 8's at once, but you can have 16 faders on one system by using a command 8 w/ a 002 with the control surface. I do think Digi could have sold more command 8's by making them look more like/ connect better to a 002, but hey, what do I know. You can use 2 002's at once, but you need two puters, sync'd together. Though I have to admit, the free pultec bundle with a command 8 would have made buying one really tempting if I hadn't already bought one a week before the promotion. Damn Digi!!Then you can get 64 channels in LE, and record up to 36 channels simultaneously. Usually, 18 channels is enough, but guys have done the two 002 thing before. There's tons of protools knowledge at http://duc.digidesign.com. And in the MANUAL. Don't mean to be a snob, but I scoured the manual before I bought David Franz's book, and started going to these boards. If nothing else, it will help you get the terms down.

There are 4 mic/line inputs, 4 line inputs, 8 optical,1 S/PDIF (L/R stereo) on the 002. the esiest way to get ten mic inputs would be to use the 4 mic inputs built in to the 002, and get either an Octopre (Focusrite) or a Digimax (PreSonus) and run up to 8 channels through the ADAT input (Optical I/O). That would give you 12 available with just those two boxes. Later you could add 6 more mic pres or whatever through the other 4line inputs and the S/PDiF if needed .
