Well, here is the issue at hand. I wish to connect my MIDI keyboard to my laptop, which doesn't have a full MIDI port, 15-pin joystick/MIDI port, or firewire. I intend to get Sonar Pro for my laptop to do all of my sequencing. So, getting to the question, would I be better off getting a MIDI to USB converter or an external sound card that would have the capability to recieve MIDI input. Or would I need to invest in a DAW controller/audio/midi interface (which i really don't want to do seeing how as they're $1000+) My primary concern is to have a setup that will not hinder quality. Every little bit of help is appreciated, thx.

A USB MIDI device would be the way to go. Very cheap, very reliable. A couple examples...

Depending on how many devices you want to connect, there are many others.
