I've spent this second half of my life honing and perfecting my talent as a lyricist and it's come to this - I wanna produce music.
I'm limited to a budget of $10,000 but more so by my limited knowledge of how best to build a home studio. My poison is hip-hop and R&B. Is there anyone out there who can help? I kind of already have "some-what" of a production team behind me, but they all have their own distinctly different views and experiences. I can really use some outside help with how to build the studio I desire.

If you are going to record the whole group live, I think that you would want something with a lot of simultanious recording capability as opposed to those who do everything themselves track by track utilizing sequencers, sound modules, drum machines. Something like a Roland rack mount hard disc rec. that used to cost a lot is now less than $500 bucks for each 8 tracks. A good multi-bus mixer used might run $1500. Something like a Tascam CD-RW5000 CD burner (rack mount) can be got for around $300. I have saved a bundle buying returned or demo gear (scratch and dent ) from the major online stores. Example, akai dps12i w/ 20 gig HD $750, FostexVM88 8 chn digital mix, $200, Tascam CD-RW5000 rack mount cd burner, $300. Used 16X8 bus mixer, $600. Behringer ultra pro comp/limiter new, $89. is my starter set up. Very portable. I also picked up a BBE sonic maximizer used for $35 in a pawn shop. 20 ft inst and mic cables, $4.99 each online. You'll need a lot of them. Best of luck

Hey!!!!

Check out the new issue of Electronic Musician. They have a great article on building your dream studio with ANY budget.
I disagreed with some of their choices of gear....but its still an excellent (and comprehensive) info on what you'll need to get your studio up and pumping out those tracks.

Oh yeah......buy your stuff from Sweetwater. They really do have the best CS in the business!
