Let me start out by saying that I am a beginner at the whole sound, recording atmosphere. I am the computer guru at my church and am now going to be involved in recording the regular Sunday church services, along with other concerts and special events using a Digi001 system put together with the help of Nika and Matt. (Thanks guys!) :D
There are many things that could be done to make the whole recording thing sound a heck of a lot better, but I would like to work with what we have right now, and then progress into better equipment as the money and time become availiable. Our previous (2) Shure Microflex MX200 were replaced with (2) Countryman Isomax Chior Mics.
I have nothing against the Mics themselves, but the placement of them does no good for either the organ or choir. If I could have my way I would mic each individually, but that is something that needs to be worked on. . . The mic is placed 8 1/2' to 9' off the ground. It is closer to the organ bellows, than the choir loft. I would say that you are getting 2/3 organ and 1/3 of the chior. But the mix between the different sections of organ are off alot. (I will get a photo to show a better image than what I describe.) What can I do to get a good mix of everything, both levels of the organ and the chior, off from the current system in place. If I have left anything out please let me know, thanks for your help in advance.

Nate,

I gave the idea to Jeff on the phone that the problems you are likely having are a result of collapsing the stereo pair of microphones to mono. You have them very wide apart for doing this. I'd sooner have them much narrower - in fact as narrow as is possible - in this situation. I recommended to Jeff using your hypercardioids in an X/Y pattern in front of the choir. You should still have good rejection from the rear and from below, but you should pick up the chancel quite nicely. See here (http://www.dpamicrophones.com/art61.htm) for more information on X/Y micing and other stereo microphone techniques.

Thanx!
Nika.
