I'm looking at upgrading my computer, but I'm hearing conflicting information on the MOTU 2408 working with various Athlon based chipsets.

Currently my system looks like this:

Windows 98SE
Abit BE6-II Motherboard
P3 500MHz
512MB SDRAM
GeForce2 GTS Pro
15GB 7200 WD (System Drive)
40GB 7200 WD (Storage Drive)

Here is what I want it to look like:

Windows 2000
Abit KG7 RAID (VIA 686B/AMD761 Chipsets)
Athlon 1.4GHz
1GB DDRAM
GeForce2 GTS Pro
15GB 7200 WD (System Drive)
2 x 40GB 7200 WD (Audio Storage)

Basically my question is, has anyone had any serious issues with the 2408 working with any non-Intel based chipsets. If so what chipsets have had problems, what chipsets have worked?

Any help is greatly appreciated on this as I'm looking to upgrade in early December.

That is one of the biggest issues with AMD is hardware compatability. Its been getting pregressively better since the K6 but it still does not have near the support as Pentium. A friend of mine made that mistake and I have definately learned from it as I was the one he kept calling to fix it, hehe.

I would say wait to upgrade until late february or early march which is when the Northwoods processors will be out from intel. They will open at 2 and 2.2 ghz (I think) and have double the L2 cache that a normal P4 has. It also runs cooler and takes up less power than the current P4s as well. So as far as compatability goes, even though Cubase may be optimized for AMD, go Pentium. Its faster than AMD and you won't have any compatability issues. not to mention that you will be able to jump up to at least 4 ghz with the Northwoods series, maybe even more. With AMD and the current P4s, you can't do that.

The KG7 is not based on a VIA chipset, it actually uses an AMD760 chipset for the CPU-PCI interface.

It does have a VIA 686B USB controller, but it shouldn't be an issue at all.

I'm using a similar board...the Gigabyte GA-7DXR with an Athlon 1.4 and its been perfect for me. I'm actually using the MOTU 828 under Windows ME.
