i purchased the yamaha msp5 and they sound great but my problem is that when i mix i always put to much bass in the mix.. i have learned to deal with it. but i would really like to know what the lower end frequency's are doing..i think thats what i am missing in my mixes. its a small studio...Aardvark Q10 which i am very happy with..thankyou to everyone who helped me...but should i purchase a sub to help me out and what can i get away with price wise. i'd like to keep it 200-400$.

I believe Tannoy makes a few right in that price range (the top end of your price range though). I too am lookng for a studio sub. I am using Dynaudio BM6's and the Dynaudio sub is really spendy. I think yamaha makes one in your price range as well as Event and Samson. Has anyone used the Event sub?

Make sure the acoustics of your room aren't eating up your bass. Small rooms have really nasty LF nodes, and adding a sub won't necessarily fix the problem.

i am in one room which is 22'X17'X11' i created a little nook thats 10'X7' using false walls they sit 4' high which i don't think changes anything. i was going to try out the samson 120 something tomorrow. its the lowest price studio sub... i have learned that if you have adaquate mics, room, instruments, but if your levels are off it doesn't make anything sound good...would it be a better idea to sell my yamaha's and save up a little and buy a nicer pair like the tannoy reveals or even mackie hr624.
Please let me know where you found a Tannoy sub for $400. There used to be a model in that price range, but it has been discontinued. If there has been a replacement for that price, I have not been able to find it.
I use Reveals and System 600's, at this point without a sub. I have not added a sub because of two reasons:
1) I have not had trouble having my mixes translate to full range systems, when mixing on Reveals and 600's, alone.
2) As has been said in this thread - and many times from board members - subs can be a very problematic addition to a monitoring system...
Best to you in your endeavors.

right here:D
I'm sorry, xtatic. I really was not clear in my request. I am interested in a Tannoy sub that uses a minimum 10" driver. If you find one for $400, I am really interested...I have found, for my needs, the 8" drivers will give 'bass', but do not sound 'deep' enough, subjectively...
Best to you.

Hello all. The sub question is one which requires a lot of for-thought and planning. As michael pointed out, room acoustics are probably as much of a factor as anything. If you do choose to get a sub, you will need to take great care in where you place it in your room, and you will also need to take great care in how you set the sub level in proportion to the main speakers. As much as i like subs, i think that most home studios, and even most smaller commercial studios should stick to stereo monitoring for mixing, unless they have a qualified person setting up the sub and room acoustics. As a mastering engineer, it's a nightmare to listen to a mix that someone has mixed on a sub system. I seriously suggest you consider saving your money. get your mix to sound as good as you can in your room, and then use your home theatre system to check out the performance on a system with extended low frequency response. The sub will sound great while you are mixing - if you try it you will likely love it, but it will probably cause you more problems with your mixes - at least until you've adjusted it correctly and had some experience mixing on it. Ironically, many of the mixes that i have heard that were done on systems with subs actually have a really weak,or muddy bass. The money could seriously be better spent on other items.
