I've been recording some of my old records to CD and have just purchased an MBox. It occurs to me that the mbox might do a better job getting a good signal to the computer than the cheap sound card in the computer.

I've been using the line out from the receiver to go to the line in on the computer. With the mbox, I can go line out from the receiver to the TR in on the mbox (with RCA to 1/4" adapter).

Is there a way to go to the mbox directly from the turntable? The turntable needs a preamp, and I don't know if the mbox preamp is a match for that or if I should still use the stereo receiver

any suggestions?

You can't go directly from the turntable to the Mbox because the turntable is a phono level input as opposed to a line-level input. You'll always need a mixer or reciever/amp to convert the signal.

Because the MBox has mic preamps, you could actually get enough gain going from the turntable into the XLR inputs on the MBox. You wouldn't want to do that, however, since the gain is not all a phono preamp provides. A phono preamp also provides the RIAA de-emphasis curve, without which your CD's will sound very thin and noisy. You can find an explanation of it here:

mgladney is correct in suggesting you should still use your receiver.
