hey all,

I'm looking into another higher end mic pre and have my eyes on either the 2610 or the dual 1272 modules from vintech. I'm a bit hesitant with the 1272's because I already have an ISA 220, which my sales engineer says is very similar in color. I also have the aphex 207. Any suggestions?

Thanks everyone!

Personally I think that either preamp would be a welcome addition to most any rack. However, I really don't see how the Vintech 1272 will really sound all that similar to the Focusrite ISA 220.

I think the 1272 might be a little more versatile than the UA 2610, but I personally given what I know of what you have would get the Universal Audio. Between the Focusrite you already have and the Universal Audio you would have the capabalities of a VERY wide palette (at least preamp wise).

Of course my real vote is for the Chandler TG2, and a certain someone else will show up with a vote for the Great River:lick:

I wonder who that would be?

So that's 1 for the 2610, 1 for the chandler TG2, apparently 1 for the GR, and a whopping zero for the 1272.

jk.

THanks guys...please keep it coming.

If you've got the money for a 2-610, I'd look at something else to compete it against, such as a Neve 1073-based circuit or something from API

I find the 1272 to be rough around the edges, and a little too aggressive for catch-all everyday use. When you don't have oodles of preamps laying around, you need pieces that are more flexible.

As to whether you go for the 2-610 or the Chandler/Great River/API/whatever, that depends on whether you want a thick, fat, warm, somewhat fuzzy tube preamp with the inherent slower attack characteristics, or a faster (but still not way fast), warm, pleasingly aggressive preamp with extended bottom.

The former will work really well on vocals, bass, (and I'm told, surprisingly) on electric guitar. The latter will also work well on electric guitar, but will be better than the former on drums and acoustic guitar, while still working well on many vocals.

I apologize that this is all about semantics. I looked in the rack today, and realized that we're up to 18 channels of these things, plus a couple others floating around. It's a disease.

It's a disease....and the only cure...is MORE COWBELL!

Anyways....I just picked up the 2610 a couple minutes ago. I'm all about the thick, fat, warm, and somewhat fuzzy side of things....(especially the fuzzy)

Thanks for the fast advice xstatic and michael.

I'll post some samples when I get a chance.

looks like you got the 610 right?? How do you like it. I was going to put in a vote for the 1272...i have the GR MPNV and yeah its better....but I have the 1272 and I've had great sucess using it on many things...its a great value.

I love it!

I haven't noticed the input distortion that some people have run across, but then again, I haven't had a "loud" source in front of it yet, mainly just soft vocals; I'll gladly post a sample soon. I like the eq too:bounce: Nice feature!
