i sent a message earlier, but it didn't go through. i want to build a home studio and would like advise on whether the following configuration will work for me. primarily, i'll focus on sound design and scoring film.

computer: i have a g4, 400 mhz w/ plenty of ram

sofware: i want to get nuendo plus (and i need help here) one of the following: digital performer, cubasevst/32 producer, or logic audio platinum... which one of the three would be best for me? (do all of them support quicktime inports?)...

hardware: motu 2048 mkII, motu midi timepiece a/v w/ usb interface (should i go with steinberg's hardware instead? the only problem is that it's twice the price. will i have a substantial quality diference by going with motu instead?)

synth: yamaha motif-6

i just want to make sure that whatever i buy will deliver the goods. also, that i'll be able to expand my studio as needed. thank you.

you're the only one who can answer which software is best for you. if you have any technical questions, i'm sure there are many people here qualified to answer them.

the Nuendo bundle (SYSTEM 1) comes with RME hardware. it is very good. (you save money buying the system - probably close to $900)

as far as a 'large' difference between the hardware, i think it difficult to quantify such things. on the other hand, when dealing with many components (especially of the computer nature), a lot can be said for an integrated system... something to think about anyway.

of the components that you listed, i think the only 'deliverance of goods' will be up to you! ;)

as for for cubase... I think that it is really a bad program... I've worked with it on Mac and PC platform... I've been using Digital Performer for 2 years now and have had almost no problems with it at all... Steinberg stuff always seemed to screw up at the most crucial parts of a project.. Plus Vst Plugs are terrible compared to MAS plug-ins like Waves, Altiverb, and Bombfactory stuff

as for a card... go with a MOTU 2408.. or if you want 24 bit/ 96k go with a motu 1296... remember... the sound is only going to be as good as the a/d conversion... Apogee makes the best convertors... which can be used in conjunction with a 2408 through Light Pipe.. or SPDIF...

why do you say apogee is the best?

it's common knowledge that they are the best... just ask a sweetwater guy and he'll tell you the same thing

you're on the right track with the mac though - at least in my book .. i'm using the g4 dual 500 (only half of it) .. sweetwater put it together for me with the digi001 .. and i've been sailing mostly smoothly from day one .. i'll second the apogee props .. i've heard lots of praise - even over digidesign hardware!

you know if you used DP3 you would have so much more power since you have dual processors

actually i've been looking at that .. can't decide which piece in an ever growing list i need first .. thanks for the reinforcement though! it's great to hear multiple people suggesting the same thing!

what sort of configuration have you been looking at exactly?

well personally i havent spent a lot of time looking at the dp3 .. but after seeing this post i looked it up a little more in detail .. i dont think it's compatible with pro tools or rtas .. i have the g4 dual with the digi001 .. i may be wrong .. cause like i said .. i havent researched it very far .. since i didnt see pro tools support listed with it .. if anyone knows pass it along .. thanks!

Why don't you stick to your garbage and I'll stick to mine? Sound like a plan? If you think that the 2 Apogee AD8000 Special Edition convertors that I have are trash.. You should definately take up another profession... or you belong recording awful cover bands... and/or ripping off kid bands. Have a nice day :-)

I'm not trying to but in here, but im really interested in which converters are the best. I have always been told Apogee was the premier converter and I know of one studio where I live who recently installed them in their "B" studio which runs ProControl :)
If some people could point me in the direction of some reviews or web-sites devoted to this topic I would greatly appreciate it. thanks

i have no clue which are 'best', but some brands to look into

Prism (i really like these)
Weiss
dCS
Mytek
Benchmark
Lucid
Genex

RME (they sound different than apogee, not necissairily better - not in the same legue as most of the above.
