I am considering the buying the 828 and an HP n5475 laptop which uses the 1GHz mobile Athlon 4 processor (not a PIII). Two questions:

- Anyone have any warnings for me about the Athlon and the 828?
- More generally, do people warn against using the 828 with a PC to begin with? I want a PC because it works better with my work style, but I don't hear great things about the 828 and PCs...

Many thanks.

Rob,
MOTU says that the Athalon has been fine since they passed 400Mhz.
Avia chip set is NOT recommended by MOTU.
828 works as well under windows as it does on Mac and they ship wave/WDM, ASIO 2, and GSIF drivers with it.
Firewire add-on cards must be approved. They recommend Adaptec and keyspan PCI or PCMCIA cards.

I'm using the 828 on a Athlon 1.4 gig PC without any problems. There are some firewire adaptors that do not work with the 828, I believe MOTU's site has more information on this.

When using a firewire card with the 828, use a card with either a Lucent or Texas Instrument chip.
Using the 828 with the built in firewire port on that machine is fine.

OK- I'm a COMPLETE novice about such issues, but can someone explain to me about Firewire adaptors. Is this what you need to connect to your PC if it doesn't have an in-built FireWire port in order to run the Motu 828 successfully? And if so, through what port do you connect the adapter to the PC through? Wouldn't this decrease the efficiency of the Motu's performance if it was run through an extra external thing? (Sorry if this is a completely duh-brain question! I'm soooo confused!):(
