I'm supprised to see no-one talking about the Icon anymore...

Either way it's out now and there's info on digi's site...

I made up a "dream" list...

D-Control $60,000
HD3 Accell $13,000
192 Interface $4,000 x6 Total is $24,000
192 A/D option card $1,295 x3 Total is $3,885
192 D/A option card $1,195 x3 Total is $3,585
D-control fader pack $30,000 x4 Total is $120,000

Total is $224,470

6 192's = 48 i/o's
3 A/D's = 24 i's
3 D/A's = 24 o's

Total of 72 I/O's and 80 faders...

Dosen't include the monitor or the computer..which would be another $5,000 or so..

Any investors want to build a studio that would break ground on the forefront of technology?

$216,470

That's why no body's talking about it. However, I have read the information and I'm with you Randy. ANYONE want to invest the money? I would seriously think about moveing just to be a second in a place like that.

Oh well, back to work.

Dream on

Edward

I hate to be the one to do this, but your total is $8,000.00 short.
Six 192s at $4,000 each is $24,000, not $16,000.
I'll buy ya a cup of coffe to help offset the difference. ;)

Would you be able to do radio jingles on this rig? And whose living room would it get setup in?

Thinking about this too much, maybe some sort of time share situation could work out. Pressure 50 people to chip in 5k each with the promise of getting to set it up in their living room for a week. Charge an extra 2k per person to cover maintanence, cartage, and the permanent assistant (this could be you), and you could earn some money and see the world :)

So, you don't think this would work in a remote truck environment, Randy? You could spend another 250k on a nice truck with a nicely designed control room, possibly some small booths, a kitchen and sleeping quarters for 2-4 assistants. Then find a good studio manager that could keep the truck booked enough to make it profitable.

Where would it be cool? A band rents a country farm, builds a nice live room in one of the sheds, and wants to record their album there over a few weeks. So you drive up your control room on wheels, patch in, and live with the band for a few weeks before packing up and heading to the next gig. You'd need some great management to keep the thing booked (and it definitely would be a niche market), but if the product is cool enough to partially market itself rather than simply being an expensive gimic, what do you have to lose? It is only money hehe.

Sure...

With a big sign on the side that say's "Have console, will travel"

Sierously that would be a good idea....

How about "Have huge remote" instead of "Have console" .

How about: "Have money running out of my ears".

Seriously.....Digidesign needs to get over themselves.

You could be the Digi Mascot though! :D

A bit overkill.
72 inputs for a portable band recording rig? Or maybe I'm just tired and read that wrong. And who needs that many fader packs unless you're doing Post? Cut it in half and you're getting somewhere, and still overkill for alot of the sessions that would want your services.

It sure would look pretty though, huh?

I think you could fit 32 faders into a truck nicely....then again...who know's. 72 would be more for a studio than a truck..

yeah. course, I think 48 faders is right at the top limit of what I like to deal with. Give me fader banks beyond 32 for that matter. 24 gets a bit skimpy when you've got all your tracks, fx returns, groups/masters, etc. But 72! I've seen bigger, but there's really no point any more with such great automation. Noone in their right mind wants to move that far out of the sweetspot to tweak the cowbell...

I've worked on 80 channel boards and it's really nice to be able to adjust tracks on an individual basis without having to switch to some other fader bank...though moving out of the sweet spot has always been a concern. Some studios have nearfields that move on tracks behind the board so you can move the sweetspot with you...

Having originated on DAW's myself, Fader banks are part of my mentality. While I definitely prefer more channels for live work, being outside of the the sweet spot just drives me nuts. :):) Just two different approaches though, with obviously no right or wrong, as I know alot of engineers have either or both perspectives. :)

makes sense....and I understand. I've also done work on small boards with fader banks and enjoy not having to slide across 56 faders to adjust the EQ on something....

What I really like about the ICON is that it has more knobs. I really wouldn't mind bank swapping if it was in banks of 24 or more, but having more instant access knobs really makes me happy:D
