I am trying to find a way to save my digital music from an ADAT onto a CD in the .cda format. Is this the only format that all CD players recognize or will they also recognize .wav and .mp3 and .mp2 files and what would be the advantages and disadvantages of each format?

There are a number of different ways to accomplish what you want to do. Presumably you have a mixer you use with your ADAT's. You could go from there directly to a good CD recorder, OR you could bring it all into a computer and, with the right software, burn CD's from there. There are other issues to face such as mastering (http://www.sweetwater.com/insync/word.tpl?find=Mastering) and duplication. I encourage you to discuss your goals with a Sweetwater Sales Engineer. They can help you find the best thing for your specific needs.

Hi Gary,
Step one is to record your ADAT tracks into an audio software of some type. From there you can write WAV files out to your disk, then copy them to CD.

For example, I copy from my 20-bit ADAT through the lightpipe interface in a SEKD ProDIF96 Pro. The audio app I use is SAMP2496 and I record in float (32-bit format with 24-bits quantization). From there I can export as 24-bit PCM WAV files. If you are wanting to archive your tracks, this is a good way to do it.

You can record one or two tracks at a time to CD, but audio CD's can introduce irrecoverable errors. It's best to store your tracks as data. If you use a multitracking software and the right interface, you can copy the audio error-free and all eight tracks will be synchronized.
