Hello,
I currently have a pair of KRK ST6 monitors for control room use, but I find the low end lacking, and all my mixes are coming out bass-heavy. I'm wondering if adding a sub would extend the range and help battle these problems. If so, any suggestions as a brand? I've had my eye on the Event 20/20/15 or the KRK S8. Any experience on these? Thanks! ~Matt

Yepppppppppppppp it sure would. I'd recommend getting the KRK sub as it's made to be matched to KRK speakers....the Event sub is made to match Event monitors....
Make sure your controll room acoustics are in good order before adding a sub though because if they aren't then adding a sub will cause more problems than it will fix.

Depending upon the type of production you are doing, and on your listening environment a sub may or may not be the best answer. Subs tend to have certain characteristics that are not the same as the sound you get from a more full range speaker. Before you invest more money in a monitoring system that may not be ideal for you and/or your environment you may want to look at upgrading your speakers. Just food for thought - there is no one right answer to this.

Perhaps some background information would help. I run a small "demo" studio from the extra room in my house. My Digi001 DAW its run through a pair of ST6s for mixing etc. The room is a weird shape, and is treated with auralex designer foam. It was done using basic techniques like the mirror around the speakers idea, etc. I've gotten pretty good results with upper-mids and highs being well translated on other systems, but my kick and low bass always end up too loud (Low B-G on bass guitar especially). If i did add a sub, what problems would I potentially run into? Are there any sources to do some research on fixing them? thanks again, ~Matt

Adding a sub can cause worse low freq response than your getting now. Yeah..the low end will be louder but if there's lot's of reflections and "nodes", or cancelations of low end freqs then the sub will be "lying" to you and your mixes will come out incorrect, which is the problem your having now.

I'd recommend getting a couple of bass traps and putting them in the corners before you go buy sub's. See what that does for your system, then if you still need subs then go for the KRK. I do believe that 6" drivers don't have proper low end.....

Maybe you should look into replacing your speakers with a pair of 8" monitors....then you wouldn't need a sub and could save yourself from all those problems.

hmm...well thanks for the advice! I'm trying to learn as much about this as I can, however there are no acoustic classes in high school :( Here is a picture of my room, perhaps you could suggest some solutions for me?

There are two corners on either side that are untreated, and I have a feeling that might be what is causing this odd bass sound. LENRDS are quite pricey though, especially if they might not fix it, so i'll need to be totally sure before I go blow $200+ on foam again :D Thanks again, ~Matt
