Using protools? I know I create a track with the signal generator on it then insert the gate? then I can either make another copy of the Kick or bus it to another I/O. Then is it key the tone with the kick or vice versa, or am I just mixing everything up, I thought I'd ask the experts on this site to help me out..... I've done it a few times mixing on a Neve but not often enough to jam out on anything could someone clear this up for me once and for all?!

You will want to insert the gate on the track with the tone, but have the sidechain input of the gate keyed from the kick drum. The sidechain input lets a signal other than the track itself key the threshold detector circuit. That way, when the kick drum gets above the threshold you have set on the gate, it will open up and allow the sound from the tone to be heard, but will close down once the kick drum track gets below the threshold. Obviously, you will have to play with threshold, attack, release, range, etc. on the gate to get the result you are looking for.
