Just curious. Feel free to come back on more than one occassion and answer.

For me:
Car - Tuck and Patti (forgot the actual name) because it got returned by a friend and I thought I'd have another listen.
Home - Sesame Street Hits because I wanted to see my 10 month old try and dance again last night.

I'll be back to add some more.
Nika.

Not only am I a huge fan of Danny Carrey (drums for Tool) and the whole band in general, but this is their first serious use of Pro Tools on their recordings. If anyone is interested in how Tool used Pro Tools as a "tool" for their latest, they have a great interview with their engineer/ producer on digidesigns website. Excellent songs and an excellent recording have kept me from being able to take this CD out of my player.

There are no CD's in my CD player right now because I don't very often listen to music while I'm typing or reading bulletin boards (or driving or washing the dishes or doing anything other than sitting down on the couch and listening to music!) I find that music distracts my attention from other tasks (or, worse, if I put music on while doing something else, I realize that I didn't really attend to it and missed an opportunity to really listen to and enjoy it.) I find that I am happiest when I alternate on-purpose, attentive music-listening with silence.

Now, if you're question had been what was most recently in my CD player, I think the answer would have been either Julie Cruise's "Into the Night" or Terry Riley's "Requiem for Adam" or something on CDR by me.

Lester Quitzau - So Here We Are

why: really interesting sonic textures. inexplicably organic. ultimately, because i'm trying to figure out how they got all the sounds!!

i think it's a good example of a 'real' recording, where when i close my eyes, i picutre the entire band, and not some guy in an iso booth. on some decent transducers, sounds like you're there. very nice.

A mix. I have it in there because I put a really good live version of the early Pink Floyd classic "Careful With That Ax Eugene" on it that I had the irresistable urge to listen to.

Right now I have Brjork's new album Vespertine. The sounds on this album are very unique and they really draw you in.

I have a 200 disc changer in the home system. My portable has Jellyfish's 2nd album. I have found "Spilt Milk" an inspiration to listen to. It must have been a blast making this album. Roger Manning at his finest.

Tool: Lateralus and NIN: TheFragile (left disc)..

I have been addicted to both of these albums since their respective release dates and they both pretty much just stay in my cd changer, hehe. I think that both of the albums are extremely coherent and well-produced. They both enlighten me everytime I hit play and to be frank the music moves me. I also have alot of respect for both of these bands because they reinvent themselves with each project.

I can't stop listening to 16 Horsepower's Secret South. Its one of the best albums I've ever heard. The recording is perfect for the material, esp when its lo-fi. Also, how they play traditional instruments in a modern, non-traditional way is sweet.

I also like the new Aereogramme, for its honest, sweet melodies, mixed with brutal guitar and bass tones. Jesuit and As The Sun Sets for the same reasons (minus the melodies). I heard the new Kreator today, and I think I'm going to have to pick it up too. I've also been listening to Sigur Ros, Ulver and Burzum a lot too, if anyone cares.

I have Jellyfish's Bellybutton CD in there right now. Even though they are a blatent mix of Supertramp, The Beatles, and Queen........they are still an extremely talented and creative group.....or should I say....were an extremely talented group. Someone needs to talk these guys into getting back together. Bellybutton and Spilt Milk are incredible albums and I'm sure their 3rd would have been even better.
Does anyone have their box set?

The Kingston Trio (one of the "best of" or "greatest hits" collections, don't remember which) because they're great, nobody does that kind of folk music any more, and the late 50's / early 60's engineering on most of their recordings is phenomenal.

Hmm. At home, it's a CDR of Eric Young--four tracks he put together using Absynth (and available at the Absynth users group site). Why? It's excellent in and of itself, and secondly, it's a great demo of a fantastic piece of software, Absynth.

In the car, it's Perfect Circle, that thing released last spring(?). "Judith" rocks. Immediately preceeding was Eno's Music for Airports.

I'm listening to Squarepusher and I feel the need to sing his praises.. The album is " Music is Rotted One Note"

Usually this guy is fully electronic, sequencing, trance music, that sort of thing but this album is almost entirely live, insane jazz-fusion-crazy ****.. you. He plays all the instruments. you should here the bass solos on this mofo! and the drumming is insane.

not to mention some of the deepest most creative production I've heard. it is a SERIOUS HEAD TRIP!!

check him out.. I just started looking in to his electronic stuff, and it is also super cool.. though I have never had a taste for electronica in the past.

I had been listening to a Gospel Quartet, Mended Wings - Soul Business. Fantastic producing, arranging and singing, but I had been trying to decide what was missing. Instrumentally I can't find any flaws, and vocally, there's nothing wrong with the performance of the vocalists, however, there's something wrong with the mix. I've nailed it down to this. It's hard to pull the melody out. Everything is homogenous, and though it sounds great, it's just not quite right for me.

So, why do I listen. I listen to discs critically to get a good background and aural memory of what should and shouldn't happen in production, arranging mixing etc.

Well, in the car, I've got G'n'R "Appetite for Destruction" (I just never get tired of that album).

At home, I've got Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition". The Hut with Chicken Legs always gets my heart pumping.

I've gotta second cuzinit's comments on "Lateralus". The album is extremely well recorded. I actually bought it because I had never seen anyone in Stereophile Magazine recommend a heavy album before.

Truthfully, I'd love to post something that speaks volumes of my esoteric discerning taste, but ironically some friggin' Elmo DVD is actually in my CD player (thankfully it wouldn't play 'cause its a CD player only).

Aren't kids great?

TooL is...TooL! hehe...fans know what I mean :)

NIN fans certainly remember Chris Vrenna. His latest release "Tweaker" is the one of the best recording I ever heard.

The new Beck album Sea Change is the best album this year! Great production by Nigel Godrich, fantastic mixing (it retains a folk/soft rock/twang while still banging you woofers every kick drum hit), and the songs a re very well written and performed. EXCELENTE!

ya, i'm listening heavily into bjorks vespertine album as well. this is one of the more palatable IDM / Glitch style albums out there (and one of the only vocal ones actually...). One of her producers, Guy Sigsworth has made another good electronic 'pop' record with a different vocalist, "Frou Frou - Details". sort of like a less experimental bjork kind of sound, but a great pop record.

Squarepusher is another interesting IDM artist, though i actually can't stand Music is Rotted One Note, but some of his other albums are definately worth checking, like Go Plastic, etc.

well, i had to pop open my PC's CD player to see what was in there, but it was John Foxx - Metamatic. why it's there--it's an absolute classic electronic album, basically the first completely synthetic british pop record. good stuff.

Reel Big Fish - "Cheer Up." Quality music filled with unbelievable pop licks. Try it--you'll like it.

Most definitely NOT ska. For the most part.

What's in my CD player? The original soundtrack to Blade Runner. Vangelis is a frikkin genius and those synths sound so good! Watching the movie and hearing the soundtrack is what got me into analog synthesis to be honest. Such a sweet composition.

In my car CD player: Paul van Dyk's Out There and Back. One of my favourite PvD albums. There are some really beautiful songs on that cd. Pure dance music done in the European style plus some other good stuff. If you like more mainstream Trance then I suggest checking this one out.

In my computer CD player: A mix cd of my own music. I like to check out how it sounds on as many systems as possible as well as listening to a mix over and over again to identify any hot spots and the like. I'll listen to a song a hundred times or more then change something, then listen another hundred times...until I could mix it in my sleep. That's how I was taught. (taking a break every hour or so to clear one's head is a good idea too)

Song in my head: Metallica's remake of 'Turn the Page" by Bob Seiger (sp?) That's just a great one about being on tour and on stage.

"Out there in the spot light your a million miles away
Every ounce of energy you're trying to give away
and the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play"
