Anyone know how to get ProTools Free to work with MOTU 828? I'm a laptop user who prefers ProTools. Is there any version of Pro Tools that will work?

Sorry buddy, but all versions of Protools that I know of only support digidesign audio hardware. In order to be portable under Protools, you have to get a PCI expansion chasis. Protools is definitely not a very good portability option. I highly reccomend Digital Performer. It is very similar to Protools in the audio end, but has much, much better MIDI and can support a lot more hardware, including your 828 (which I also have). I have basically stoped using my Protools LE system because of how much use I get out of the Digital Performer system. So, in answer to your question, in order to be portable under protools, you would have to get a PCI expansion chasis and have some digi-design hardware like audiomedia or Digi001.

I figured that was the case. The only reason I asked was because I saw an ad on this trading post where a guy was selling a G4 TI book with the 828 and claimed that he had ProTools Free recording 8 tracks at 24 bit through it. The 828 has ASIO drivers, which many audio apps use, however not ProTools. I tried to contact that guy and ask him about it, no luck. I'm using DP 2.7 now, but don't do alot of MIDI, so I prefer PT's audio editing power. Thanks again.

I read somewhere in a magazine that the 828 comes with Sound Manager drivers and those can be used with ProTools Free. If you're just using simple MIDI (like drums) you may be able to do a simple sequence in PT Free and somehow export it to the included AudioDesk. I'm not sure if that's possible though.

The 828 ships with a sound manager driver you can use with the free version of Pro Tools
