Hey guys,
Well, I never hear anyone on here talking about suround-sound very much, so i figured I'd strike up a flame..... Any of you guys do it? Every DVD I buy is in dolby digital, and yet, I never hear about it hardly at all on the professional side of things. Any thoughts? What's needed? Also, you can buy "professional" CD burners, but can you buy "professional" DVD burners? Or just use the plain old home burners?

Just thought I'd bring up something to talk about.....

Nick,
Here's a link to a forum that talks about the professional side of surround sound. They mainly talk about b-format and ambisonic recording..but do occasionally talk about professional and consumer surround equipment. I do know that in order to make a surround cd...you will need to encode the information, and there's many formats to encode to. Like Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS and b-format etc etc. Each format has it's own encoders and decoders also. I think most of them burn the cd's inside their computers..but I'm not exactly sure. Might be a good topic to bring up on the forum.
Monitoring surround in a studio can be easly achieved by sending different signals to various busses..and sending those buss output's to amp's that power an array of speakers. For instance..if you were using a 24 buss console, you could assign buss output's 1-5 to the 5 surround speakers while still maintaining a stereo master through the master fader. Then there's consoles that are made for surround and have surround panning on them. Pro-tools also deals with surround...so you could use 6 output's of a i/o device to feed the surround speakers for monitoring. I'm not positive that this is how it's done..but thought I'd throw in what I do know.
