View Full Version : Excess Noise in Recording with Korg D8

Hi there, Gang...

I'm a fairly seasoned musicians but a total novice within the Home Studio scene. Recently, I upgraded from a Yamaha 8 Track to a Korg D8 Digital Recorder. Everything seemed to be working out okay, until I plugged a Mic into one of the two inputs. Upon recording, I noticed that the Monitor was picking up the Hard Drive noise while recording, producing a terrible buzzing noise during recording and playback. Interestingly enough, when a device is plugged directly into the machine, no noise is heard - this only transpires when I use a Mic. I've tried every Mic in my collection - they're all decent caliber, so that doesn't appear to be the source of the problem. Does anyone have a suggestion for me? Perhaps some digital recording pro can lend a hand. :) Thanks plenty!

The mic is picking up and recording the hard-disk noise. Increase the distance between the mic and recorder, make sure the recorder is out of the mic's principal pickup pattern, and you may also want to try covering the recorder during miked takes. Make sure air can flow around the machine, but still be covered during a take (you don't want to compromise the cooling of the machine in any way). Give your tracks enough lead time to replace the cover after pressing record. When your take is finished, remove the cover.

Find a box that is at least twice the size of the D8 and line it with foam. After pressing record, place the box over the machine. See if that works.

Hey, Thanks for the response...

It doesn't appear that the mic is actually picking up the external noise, but rather whatever -signal- the Hard Drive is making as it operates. It's a buzz thats heard through the cans that doesn't correlate with the clicking noise that the Hard Drive makes, but rather the actual barely audible noise of the hard drive itself... Dragging the mic a distance doesn't seem to do the trick. I can't imagine what else I can do, although your suggestions were noteworthy. Any other tips to a struggling Korg user...?

- Thanks again!
Ben
