Delay Decisions

I was wondering if any has any suggestions for delay use. Usually I just estimate it and mess around until it sounds good but I've heard that there are ways to calculate delay time based on tempo. It's a logical assumption that there would be some kind of formula but I don't know where to start with figuring it out. In pro tools there is a slider which you can use to pick the tempo but when I try to use it, it seems to make no difference on the delay time. Also, if there is any kind of suggestions for using pre-delay with reverb (formula or whatever) that would be appreciated as well.

60000 divided by the tempo will give you quarter notes. Divide the answer by half to get 8th notes,etc,etc. For pre-delay on verbs, try to use a number that's divisible by the tempo (I know that's the wrong word..I can't think right now). Say if the tempo's 135, then use a 64th delay for the pre-delay. make sense?
