I've heard at least one person who has upgraded the Alesis ML9600 masterlink to a larger hard drive (20 G). Anyone have any info or advice on this?

I know our service department has installed 30 GB Glyph drives in the Masterlink and they have worked fine. I would think any high quality 7200 RPM Ultra ATA drive mechanism, such as those by Seagate, would work.
David:
It is just a matter of changing the drive out? Is there anything else you have to do, ie: jumpers, terminations etc....?
Does the software care what size drive is there or it can address?
thanks

What about formating the drive????
Oops....
I meant to say "Is it" instead of "It is".
That makes a big difference.
Good question? What about formatting the new drive. Is there a routine for that in the software?

Per the guru's of tech support here at Sweetwater, if anyone other than an authorized service center performs the swap, it will void the warranty, and it is definitely not recommended. However, "most" EIDE drives should work, and the default jumper settings for "master" IDE device, should work. *The format function is documented on p.40 of the manual. According to tech support at Alesis, they have not tested the Masterlink with anything larger than a 30 GB drive and they do not recommend anything larger at this time (thanks for forwarding that to me Bill!). Hope this clears up a few issues, and please feel free to ask if there are more questions.

Are you saying thatif Sweetwater modifies a Masterlink HD that the warranty will NOT be voided? Thanks, Bill

Yes, if an authorized service center, such as ours, performs the upgrade, the warranty will not be voided.

Alesis tech support said that no one can upgrade the Masterlink HD without voiding the warranty.

My apologies for the confusion. We have just confirmed with Alesis that upgrading the hard drive will void the warranty, no matter who does the install. They have been a bit inconsistent with their policies regarding warranty service since the buyout, and hopefully, we will be able to do this modification in the future without voiding the warranty. We have certainly performed the upgrade a number of times with no ill effects however.
It never ceases to amaze me.....our crazy business
You can change a part out on a $50,000 car and not void the warranty
but not on a$1000 piece of electronic gear.
Why did they just not put a carrier in them so we could use hot swaps just
like our PT Glyph's and RADARS, as well as TASCAM's , Mackies and oh yes Alesis HD24.
Go Figure...
