Hi, I'm looking at buying a new pair of headphones, preferrably in the $100 USD range. I'll be using them for pretty much everything: studio referencing, practicing, listening...

I've been looking at the Sony MDR-7506, any thoughts or suggestions for another brand/model?

Thanks, Merry Christmas!

I love the 7506's. They're a good overall headphone. I've used them in the studio for lot's of projects, and they last a long time and sound great. I would recommend them to anyone with $100!:bounce:

AKG makes a couple models in that range that sound pretty good too. K240m or k240s are the ones I've tried. The 240s is a lower impedance set so they are louder.

I bought some AKG K240's abot a year ago from guitar center for 90 bucks. They are fantastic. It's amazing the difference in mix you can hear with headphones on that are quality. I'm really happy with them, i like using them in editing a cappella to take out breath marks cause I can really hear the nuances of the voices. Thats my vote.

Thanks so far everyone. I've been looking at the 240's and they look great, but I'm thinking the impedance is too high for what I'll be using them for.. Any thoughts about the K 141, 171, and 271?
Are the AKG's really that much better than the Sony MDR-7506?
Thanks, have a great day...

I've been using Audio Technica's ATH-M40fs for quite a while now. I really like their sound, and low enough impedance to run off of cheesy CD players. There are some design issues (I think the Sony stuff is more road-worthy), but I got 'em for free, so no complaints. I've seen prices around $100.

The k240S is a low impedance verson of the 240m (high impedance) AKGs. They are good, and loud.

Thanks for all the input! I didn't see the new k 240s
I think that'll be my solution!!

I'm happy about getting some new cans!

I noticed that the k 240s is only semi-closed, how much ambient noise will I get compared to the mdr-7506 that is completely closed?

thanks

the 7506's are pretty good about not bleeding cue into a mic, unless your in a dead room recording vocals with a loud cue mix, but they will be more isolated than a semi-closed headphone being that they're closed ear.

I have used the Sony's, the AT's and all the different AKG's. I always end up back with the Sony's. Even the new low impedence 240's are no where near as loud as the Sony's. I did Live Sound for Ratt about a month ago at a club and we had forgotten a pair of headphones in the truck. The house guy brought us his pair of AKG240s headphones. My monitor engineer put them on and said they sounded pretty good, but the second the band started up again he couldn't hear them at all. $ minutes later we had our 7506's out of the truck, no problems. I have a half dozen Sony's, and 4 Akg's in my studio. I like the way the 240's sound, and do occasionally use them when laying vocals out, but every band has gone with the sony's whenever they are in the same room with a guitar stack or the drums. They are the only ones cpable of driving that hard with decent low end and no distortion. I find myself using them even though the AKG's might sound a little better because I am used to translating what I hear in the Sony's. I can't say too much about the AT's. I was buying a pair of headphones the other day and the salesperson reccomended I try them out. I had time so I did some AB tests. The sony's were WAY louder, had a much better frequency response, and smoother sounding highs. I haven't put a pair of AT 40's on since.
