Hi,

Just ordered your're ibook/motu 828/DP v3 bundle and am now wondering about HD speed and the 66mHz bus in the ibook.

I called MOTU today and they said DP v3 should run w/ a 7200 rpm drive and 133mHz bus. Is the ibook a realistic pairing of gear or should I aim higher than the ibook. My rep at Sweetwater (Chris) has been extremely (!) helpful in assessing my needs, but I remain a touch concerned about HD speed upon further research. So I just thought I would ask.

Does anyone have light to shed? - thanks Mike

MCChimes,

I've had a privilege of talking to Dave Roberts of MOTU, who shared with us the results of their own in-house testing of iBook/828/DP3 combo. They were able to pull 24 tracks of recording and playback with the internal ATA drive. Please let me know of the results you are able to obtain. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

While I will whole-heartedly suggest that a fast external drive, and higher buss speeds are critical to running a large session, or one with thick edit density, I will agree that he should be fine for a typical 16-24 track session with average editing. Of course, this is going to be somewhat dependant on how well you maintain the drive. If you didn't purchase NORTON, you might want to ask Chris about it, where you have a slower drive, you'll definately want to defragment it on a regular basis in order to keep it running as effiecently as possible.

RecordingPro or anyone,

How much more efficient (i.e. faster, increased plug-in load, lots of editting) would the ibook and DP be w/ the Glyph firewire (7200 rpms vs. 4500) drive added as the dedicated audio drive?

Besides the extra storage, would I feel the difference?

while the ibook shouldn't be your only platform, because it WILL limit you, I use it as my portable solution in combination with my Dual Processor 800mhz G4. I can do a couple tracks of recording, I've tested with 2 simultaneous inputs, and about 6 out. It is nice, but will limit you if you get up there in track counts.
