Hi guys, I'm a newbie to the digital recording world so forgive the fact that I'm asking a LOT with this solicitation for advice. I'll be building a home studio from the ground up, and wondering if anyone has thoughts about the best way to go.
IDEA 1 - buy the Mixed Logic control surface (USB) and use its 24-track layout for "old-school" type interface with software. If I go this route, I have no idea what else I'll need to be up and running (mic pre-amps, etc).
IDEA 2 - the Digidesign 002 control surface (firewire). Looks like everything is included to get up and running quickly, but not sure if the "8-fader" layout would leave me wanting more (as in 24 faders) down the road. The fact that it's ProTools only is fine with me (have to pick one application anyway).
IDEA 3 - Mackie Control (MIDI). Has good expandabililty past 24 faders, but not sure about the speed/latency issues with a MIDI-based setup.
IDEA 4 - Digital Mixer (16 or 24 faders) into my PC. Mixer would probably be the Behringer DDX3216 (Mackie D8B would be awesome but a little pricey to justify).
Of these 4 ideas, I'm looking for the maximum number of faders so I don't continually have to jump "banks" to access a higher track (which is a really nice feature of the MIxed Logic M24). Also looking to keep the cost under about $3500 or so (not counting PC). I assume automation would be a good thing, as would ability to interface with plug-in software. Need zero or very low latency as I will be overdubbing while monitoring playback.
Any opinions on the best set-up (and what hardware I'll need to make it happen) from some of the experienced digital gurus??
Thanks in advance guys!!
