Hi there

Im about to put a surround monitoring system together for my Digi001 and 03D (which supports surround pan.), and was thinking if active monitors or expensive studio monitors are the only choice IŽve got.
Is it possible to get reliable sound on a home cinema surround system in the pricerange $1000-1200, or do need a more pro. solution.
Comments from home cinema system users and pro. users would be nice.
I will use the system for post pro.!
Thanks alot

You may wanna double check this but Digi001 uses Pro Tools LE software which doesn't support surround sound capability. Just something to think about ...

Hi there
Thanks for the reply.
Actually, I want to use the Digi001 with the DP software, which supports surround pan. Even with PT LE I would still be able to do surround, since my Yamaha 03D supports surround panning.

It can be done on a home system just fine, but it would be very advantageous to have a real studio setup as well, and then double check on the home system. What are you using for studio monitors right now?

Hi Xstatic
Thanks for your reply.
Right now Im using a pair of NS-10m monitors. I have been thinking of getting another pair of these, a sub, some sort of center monitor, and a 5.1 home theater receiver.
What do you think?
WouldŽnt the home receiver color the sound too much?

That really depends on the home reciever. I might consider not buying more nsm 10's if those are your only monitors. Also, many surround setups in studios use the exact same kind of monitor for center and rear as they do for left and right. Maybe you should take a look at the new Mackie 624(?) powered monitors. Not too spendy, but negates the need for a home receiver. Also, do you have a DVD burner?

Hi there
Thanks for helping me out.
I have been looking at several active monitors too. I actually found that you can buy a 5.1 setup of actives for apx. $500 extra the price you would spend on a passive setup.
I will look at the Mackies, right away!
What do you think of the active Resolve65 from Samson?
I dont have a DVD burner. But I will buy one, the moment Im in business!

Maybe try a pair of Audix 1A's. Nice and flat, with better low end. They list for $599.00 a pair.

Just looked at the 624. In my country they list for $800 EACH. Thats too much for me. Looks great though!
Also thanks to you DOC. I will look at the Audix.

I would avoid the samsons. Maybe look at the Tannoy reveals then. Or even KRK V6's. Also, Blue Sky makes a decent surround setup as well that comes packeaged with a decent matched sub.

KRK V4s are pretty good for the money. I love my KRK V8s

The Samson Resolv line are great for the price, but won't beat hr624's in a comparison anyday. Actually one of the clients that our team works with is a major video game producer. They're currently using 2 complete surround systems based on passive Resolv65's, the Resolv120 active sub hooked up to Marantz surround decoders for their final "real world" mix check on the Dolby, Pro Logic II, and DTS mixes for the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube...They love 'em.
