third quick question .. i think i said before that i'm a recently new mac user .. it's still a bit foreign to many things .. but last night i began to record a session and i got a message "could not allocate space .. disk may be fragmented" .. at the risk of sounding completely clueless .. what do i need to do? tried using a copy of norton utilities but it wouldnt run on the computer .. and the disk doc on the mac didnt do anything .. by the way this is my set up

mac dual 500 w/ 512 megs of ram
os9
digi001
seagate 18gig

bought from sweetwater so i know it's great stuff .. anyone have an idea? thanks!

are you using a seperate drive for your audio? If not, you really should. It's a very cheap way to improve your performance, increase storage space, and make file management a lot easier.

With that said, in the meantime, you can do small to medium size jobs on your system drive, although it's not particularly reccomended. Run Norton or another disk-defragmenter regularly, and back up your work often. As to why norton wouldn't run on your system, I'm not sure what is happening there. What version of norton? did you install norton, or just try to run it off the cd?

yeah i use two different drives .. the internal drive of course has the system operating and pro tools software .. and the seagate 18 gig scsi drive only handles audio tracks .. but i tried recording to both drives to see if it was just drive isolated and it gave me the same message for both drives .. absent mindedly i only tried running norton from the cd .. so ill put it on the harddrive and try that .. other than that im not sure what else to do .. and honestly ive not really formatted nor defragged before .. anything else?

quite ofter, you don't want to install norton, just run it from the CD drive. One "quick fix" you can try is to drag any files on your audio drive onto your system drive, and then re-initialize your second drive. Then drag your pro tools session back over. This will essentially defrag the drive...then, if you are still recieving error messages, we know that there is something else going on.

cool, good to hear. Of course, you'll want to get norton working when you can, but the init trick works very well.

If you have any other problems, don't hesitate to ask for help again.

wow...what version of norton do you have ? That could be the problem. I don't know, but I'll try to find out....

I'm not familiar with DAWBOX, but I will definately agree that having a complete system configured for you is much better than trying to piece it together yourself. Sweetwater has been offering this service for years. I work with this everyday, and even people that think they know everything about computers and can do this have problems...the turnkey systems really reduce the number of problems my clients have.

i have a g4 500 dp
mac os 9
don't have an external drive yet.
problem is every time i try normalize a region , i get dae error -39. when i try to bounce to disk , error type -2 (unexpectantly quit, restart. i've defragmented my hd w/ norton , but it still acts up. any suggestions.

next, when i open a session , protools tells me that "this is not a valid protools session", when i just worked in it.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
