How come I can play a mix in my car and it just lowers in volume on the peaks of the song?
I've gotten some pretty good mixes as far as sounds and evenness of dynamics in my studio is concerned but alway's wondered why when i crank it up loud the volume drop's and it get's all mushy sounding.
Is it because of recording at 44.10,24 bit?
btw.my car don't have one of them compressor buttons

Hmm I've never had that problem with my mixes.... What format did you record with? I use tape when I record... so much easier to work with for me. I don't have a good enough pre for recording digital.

Does this just happen in your car, or on all other playback setups outside your studio?

I can't really answer that.I assume yes.
I have also tooken my mixes to a mastering place and it doe's it on that to.
But then again it was all done 44.10/24 bit, even the mastering.
I watched him and he used the L3 maximizer by waves and q 10 and that was about it.
It's frustrating because in the car when I turn the volume up I want it to get louder instead of tucking down in volume.
It might be I need to carve out some bass, but boy I'd rather not.lol

That's why I love analog lol. You really can't screw it up too bad :) The only downside of course is the loss in fidelity if I wanted to convert to digital.
It sounds like there is something going on... but I am not sure what. You said that everything looked right and sounded right in the studio? The problem must be some setting on your cars system.

I have a pic of my mixer, but I didn't take any pictures of our recording setup :( I just had your average Peavey PV14, a cheap RS 33-3001 microphone and pop filter. I used an old tape deck with high bias tape... I wished that I had a better deck, but it worked for awhile.
The sound turned out really well actually. Believe it or not, I managed to record my drums pretty well with just a kick drum mic and one mic in between the toms—placement is key :) The guitars were close mic'ed with RS 33-3001's. Instrumentally, everything sounded superb! Vocals... yeah we were changing vocalists more than you would change clothes lol.
I might be doing some live recording soon... I need to get a new tape deck though... the old one crapped. Not too bad for it being 20 years old... it was starting to eat tapes though. I managed to get a couple of SM57's and SM58's for the next go around since they are much better than the 33-3001's :) Getting a couple condensers would be ideal... but to do it right would cost too much. If I am getting good results using less expensive gear, why pay more?
