I am looking for feedback on suggestions for a good mic preamp and a good mic. I'm currently using a 2009 Mac Pro quad running Logic Pro 9 and I'm using an Apogee Ensemble as the interface. I also have a UAD 2 Quad Neve card installed and I've added the 4K bundle as well as the Compressor Bundle so I have the 1176, LA-2A, Fairchild, etc. I'm happy using the Ensemble and right now I have a Rode 1A mic that I use.
I'm a musician first and foremost so I've never really had the need for mics as I play keyboards. I'm in the process of getting ready to record 2 people for a major project. One is a singer and the other a rapper. I'm wondering what recommendations anyone would have for top quality preamps and mics. I was looking at an Avalon VP737 as I know the track record of it but I figured I would ask. I believe in buying right the first time so I realize and I'm prepared for the investment which I expect to be $5K range as I know some may suggest going with a variety of mics and preamps.
I'm looking for that "pro" sound and I've come to the point where it's something I will need for what I'm doing. Thanks for any feedback and suggestions.

I would think the pres in the Ensemble would be good enough for what your doing. But if you want an external pre, check out the True P-Solo. Mics - AKG C414 or 214, AT 4050, Shure KSM 44 or 32.

If you don't have a great sounding room, I would spend the bulk of your money on room treatment. I recommend GIK Acoustics.

I kind of figured as much with the mics you recommended. Thanks. I had a Project Mix and when I got the Ensemble I ended up putting the Project Mix back in the box as there is no comparison to the pres between the two. I have the room treated as I was previously doing some pretty high end work for others. I've just recently decided to do those same things for myself so I will check out the mics you recommended.
I live in a place that really only has 1 music store. The closest Guitar Center is 2 hours away so I will wait until I go home (Pittsburgh) sometime next week and demo some various mics. Thanks again for pointing me in a good direction to get started.
