I am in serious need of better computer speakers and I don't have a clue on where to start. Right now I'm using the cheap, small computer speakers that came with the tower. My main objective for the upgrade is to improve the bass tone and clarity from digital media. I do not do home recording so this is purely for listening and learning objectives.

I play bass in a band and I'm having difficulty learning bass parts from digital media. I know the media is fine because when I play it in my car, the notes are very distinguishable. My budget is not much, maybe $250 max. What would you guys suggest I do, go with low budget powered studio monitors or look for a decent computer speaker/sub system?

Might try the m-audio bx5 speakers. They are powered and around that price.
Pretty good bass on them to.

bx-5s are great.

But since you're not doing recording with critical judgements, I'd just find a good all-in-one stereo system with an Aux In port (I used to use a $150 Sony all-in-one stereo before I got my first studio monitors)

JBL made some pretty decent computer speakers a few years ago :)
