Marantz PMD670 as a Preamp?

Hopefully someone here may be able to provide me with an answer to this question,

If I purchased the PMD671 can I use it as a Preamp to connect my XLR mics to the computer and record directly to the computer?

Marantz themselves were unable to give me an answer on this.

Hopefully someone else will know for sure. I don't know for sure, but my answer is that I don't think so. It will show up as a storage device for file transfers, but I don't think it shows up as an audio device. Further, if it did, then it means they'd have to maintain driver compatibility with Windows and Mac, etc., and in as much as they never mention this, and don't seem to know anything about it...well, I would take that as good evidence that it isn't going to work.

For safety I think I'll get the Zoom H4N as it does have the ability to be used as a preamp.
