Has anyone tested the new operation system to
see how programs such as FINALE; Alfred Theory;
and others work?
Which Mac is the best to buy if you want to
use it for both keyboard and Midi: save large
files of music; word processing; and the web.
I've read in Mac World that some of the
computers don't have enough slots to work with
both input from midi while using a usb adaption
for floppy disk when using SMART MUSIC.
When I go to buy a new computer, I usually
feel like Jack. I bring home some "magic beans"
that won't do what I need to be done.

At this time my general advice to people buying Mac computers is to wait on OSx until the industry is standardized with its use. I'm not really sure what the benefits of OSx are to people in our industry at this point. It looks like its not well supported at this time.

I hope this helps!

It's been widely admitted that OSX, while a brilliant OS in the works, is really in a late-user-beta stage and users are fully warned that not all features are enabled yet. MIDI has not yet been written into the product (they just hired the guys from OMS/Gibson to put it in.) Most programs and parts of the operating system are still running in the OS9 compatibility box.

Give it about 6-12 months and it'll be a killer OS. You'll know when it's time when all the major applications (Cubase, Logic, etc.) come out native for OSX.

Can you imagine the mess Microsoft would have if they tried going from CISC to RISC and BSDUnix???? Look at all the problems they're having with all the different flavors of Windows now!

I am quite happy with my imac DV. I don't have any PCI slots but the money I saved let me by a USB hub, a MIDI interface, CD burner... With all of the firewire products comming out now I am even more justified for my imac. On the other hand, I am stuck with the same display, i can't add aditional internal hard drives, and I can't use any PCI products (digi 001, MOTU 325, ect...).

I am running os9.1 on my imac. It is working great for audio. I use Digital Performer, and love it. I think every one is using 9.1 for now. It is solid and time tested.

Jacob,

Thanks! I was under the impression that you were running OSX, in which case I was going to be very confused. I'm glad you enjoy your system, and OS9.1 sounds like the right OS for your needs.

Thanx!
Nika.
