I was wondering if someone could give me some ideas on which recording software would best suit my needs. What I would like is something that my friend and I could use (living several states away) to write an album together (we are both guitarists). We would have to be able to send each other files (however that would be done) so that we could compose songs and build on each others ideas. Also, it would have to work on both a Mac & a PC and be somewhat user friendly (not to in-depth). Lastly, if it could be $150 or less would be great as well. I'd appreciate any info you could give. Thanks.

Buy a recording interface, If you are a Guitarist you may want to look into Line 6 ( http://line6.com/podstudiogx/ ) you'll have use of their plugins which avoids the need for amps and mics. Then download free recording software from http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

Most interfaces come with some form of recording software, most of which support enough features to accompish what you want.

IK Multimedia, has Riffworks, which gives you just that sort of flexibility, to share with a whole web-full of people, or just your friend. You can check out the demo at their website. Very user-friendly, from what I've seen, I just purchased Cakewalks Guitar Tracks Pro 4, and I love it, was on sale, but usually under a $100, everyday! Good luck!
