I have a pc based recording setup strictly for fun....Sonar 2.0 w/ M-audio and Omni I/O. I also have a good integrated amplifier (Arcam Alpha) and wish to use it to drive passive monitors. Here's my question: I can get a very good pr. of speakers with ruler-flat response curves for a lot less $$ than what they are asking for passive "monitors". It seems when they tag them "monitors", it allows the mfr. to charge exhorbitant prices. I understand all about the need for accuracy when monitoring your recordings but what on earth is the difference between a $300 pr. of audiophile quality speakers known for their accuracy and a $600 pr. of "monitors"? Any advice is appreciated.

You'll probably be OK with the 'audiophile' quality speakers, your sweet spot may be narrower though. Which 'audiophile' speakers are you looking at? Paradigm? They're pretty rockin'

thx for the quick reply. I already own one pair of Acoustic Energy Aegis Ones and plan to buy a second pair. I auditioned them agains several other in that price range and they won out. I know for a fact that they do not have any exaggerated frequency ranges....very listenable speakers.

You should be just fine for a home project studio for 'fun'.
