View Full Version : Recording out signal from my keyboard?

Here's my setup. Mac G4 Cube with a Midisport 2x2 USB interface and an Alesis QS6 keyboard.

My MIDI setup functions normally using Master Tracks Pro 6.8 sequencer. What I want to do is record audio CDs from the left and right outs out of the back of my keyboard (which, of course, acts as my sound module).

This has been done succesfully on my guitarist's PC -- we record/save the L&R signals out into a Cakewalk WAV file, and burn an audio CD from there. I have Cubasis VST Score so I have the required software (I think).

Anyway, I want to do the same thing on my Mac. Does anyone know if this is mechanically doable on a Macintosh, with its usual USB and FireWire inputs? Can anyone tell me what kind of hardware or adapters I would need to accomplish this?

Thanks! --TAC

Avoid the iMic. It's cheap, sounds cheap, works cheap. Roland, Edirol, MidiMan (MAudio) have USB audio interaces for consumers. If you're looking into something with higher quality, starting with the Tascam 428, then the MBox (though only works with ProTools LE I think) or products from Mark of the Unicorn. Depends on your budget.

Thanks for the reply. Actually I was thinking of something relatively cheap along the lines of the Midisport 2x2 hub. Nothing fancy, just an adapter, basically, with a couple of phone jacks in and a USB out.

Is there anything like that? Does a USB audio interface adapter by definition have to be complicated? Is this one situation where my friend's PC is actually more effective than my Mac? (I think he has a simple stereo mini-plug in the back of his computer.)

The Quattro looks kind of like what I want, but I'm thinking more of a Singlo than a Quattro.

The Quattro would be more than enought since you have the midi interface already.

Excellent. It looks like the UA-1A is exactly what I was thinking of.

(Although now I have total GAS [Gear Acquisition Syndrome] for a Tascam 428!)

Thanks for the help, Cory!

PS: These Sweetwater Forums ROCK. . . glad I stumbled across them the other day. . .

PSS: And -- garshk -- Sweetwater has it cheaper than anywhere else. Imagine that.

Okay, now I've got my USB audio interface installed and recognized.

How do I get Cubase to recognize an incoming signal to be recorded? It's not an icon. . . is it a "source record" or, something like that?
