Ok I see lots of people posting about monitors... heres my answer to anyone...
MONITORS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR SIGNAL. THE ONLY THING CHEAP MONITORS ARE FOR IS RECORDING VANS AND FOR THE "B" IN THE "A/B"
IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO SPEND AT LEAST $1K EACH, YOU ARE BETTER OFF MIXING IN A PAIR OF REALLY NICE HEADPHONES! OR BETTER YET, BUILD YOUR OWN MONITORS AND LEARN THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION WHAT MAKES SPEAKERS SOUND GOOD... YOU WILL BE SURPRISED TO FIND THAT IT ISN'T THE DRIVERS OR THE AMPS (AS LONG AS THEY ARE MATCHED PROPERLY) BUT THE QUALITY OF THE ENCLOSURE!
NOW...what makes a good enclosure? INFLEXIBILITY (RIGIDITY), MASS (can you pick it up easily with one hand? CRAP!) , PROPER AIRSPACE (Matched to the Woofer), and finally, THE CROSSOVER!!!!!!!!
As far as woofer drivers go, the lighter weight the cone, the better. The more rigid the better. The more powerful (not neccesarily heavy) the magnet, the better.
For tweeters, RIGIDITY. A dome tweeter DISTORTS ITSELF LIKE CRAZY JUST BY ITS PHYSICAL NATURE! GRANTED ITS BETTER THAN A CONE! BUT OPTIMALLY A RIBBON IS THE WAY TO GO, because it moves UNIFORMLY if its got a good backing plate (uniform magnetic field)! Also, WAVEGUIDES ARE VERY IMPORTANY TO CREATE A BETTER RESPONSE from domes, which TEND TO PROVIDE FLAT RESPONSE everywhere BUT the sweetspot WITHOUT A WAVEGUIDE!
DON'T GET SCAMMED BY THE BIGGEST BLACK ART IN THE INDUSTRY! MONITOR BUILDING IS A SCIENCE, THE ONLY REASON THERE ARE CHEAP MONITORS IS TO GET MORE OF YOUR MONEY, BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU WILL HAVE TO UPGRADE EVENTUALLY!
Hope this helps, you don't even have to reply, just read it!
BY THE WAY, YES I AM
