Please help! I am running Cubase SX with the Presonus Firestation on an 800Mhz PIII with 512mb ram and 40gb hard drive. Everytime I start recording Cubase freezes about 30-40 seconds into it. The computer doesn't freeze and I have to close Cubase in the task manager. My hard drive only has about 2 gb left on it. Could this be part of the problem? Somebody emailed me about a month ago referring to a similar problem on his laptop. I really have no idea where to start.

to make this as short as possible, Im just gonna tell you; its my opinion after 3 years of computer recording I have learned the best performance from my computer is when the drives Im using are at least 30 percent free space.
usually on my recording drrives they are 65 percent free space, on my samples drive I go for at least 25 percent free.
do you defrag often>?
really, what you have here is the case of the HDD not finding a place to put all the data fast enough.
when you have only 2 gigs or space on a drive with 38 gigs filled, it has to moves stuff around to make space for the conitiguos data it is writing to the drive, this can easily lead to system crashes, and explains why the host program is crashing but not the OS.
All in all, Im not a PC tech,
but my suggestion to you would be
A.to either buy a new HDD and dedicate it to recording
B.Clean out your first HDD, back up to CD and partition a space for recording.
C. Defrag using VoptXP or Diskeeper
D.for best results, do ALL of the above.
hope I didnt confuse you

Thanks Silent. I have defragged many times as I thought this could be the problem. It didn't seem to fix and I've tried clearing space on the hard drive. I am planning on getting an external firewrie drive for audio use in the near future. A while ago, I received a reply to another post about the firestatoin. THe guy asked me what troubles I was having with it because his Cubase VST running on a laptop would freeze after about 10 minutes of use, whether recording or not. I wondered if maybe this was a similar problem. Another question I have is having to do with the Firestation itself. I'm having trouble transmitting more than one audio output at a time. Especially using the mLan returns. It only monitors through the left headphone jack. Does anybody know why this is? Thanks for your help.

After some experiementation, I found that if I don't record MIDI with the Audio, it doesn't freeze. It is only when I record a MIDI part and an audio parts simultaneously that this happens. Anymore insight??
