I've been recording analog for years, then went to ADATS in the early 90's, now I've been learning how to use a DAW for the past year. I'm using a Quad 6600 2.4 GHZ, PC with Sonar 8 PE with an RME Fireface 400 interface. I have several outboard preamps etc. I just want to improve my converters. I'm a songwriter/engineer and only need a minimum 2 ch of A/D and 2 ch of D/A for high-end monitoring. How would the HEDD 192 integrate into my set-up? Would I still use the RME Fireface 400? Any better ideas? Thanks,

since your thinking of converters, i would highly recommend the rosetta 200.

IMHO, i like it much better then any of the pro tools converters, which is the main reason why i don't run pro tools.

And if you do ever switch to Pro Tools, that's one of the few interfaces that will let you. But there's a lot more to spend pursuing that method, which is basically for full-blown studios.

I have no plans to switch to Pro Tools as Sonar 8 PE is a DAW that meets my needs and is very stable. But my question is still unanswered. How does the HEDD 192 or the Rosetta 200 or 800 integrate into my set-up. Do I keep the RME FF 400 and connect via ADAT Light Pipe, SPDIF or what? I noticed the HEDD 192 has no XLR analog inputs, so, how do I get audio into the HEDD192?
Again, I'm fairly new to all of this DAW stuff so I need details. Thanks a lot everyone.

With the Crane Song unit, you'd need to feed it from your RME via the AES or SPDIF outputs (on the Fireface, I guess they're the same thing).

With the Apogee Rosetta 200, you have both of the above options, or the ADAT I/O from the Fireface, or skipping the Fireface altogether and getting the Firewire card for your Apogee:

With the Rosetta 800, you can use the ADAT optical I/O from the Fireface, or just the X-Firewire card above.

Thank you very much Michael! I understand my options now.

NICE SETUP! Definitely get the HEDD if you started on TAPE! AMAZING! Also the remote is pretty cool!

EDIT: OOOPS, its the Avocet I heard, not the HEDD...but I think the HEDD is EXACTLY what you are looking for, actually I am looking for a local studio that has one so I can go check it out! BTW the Avocet is really cool, its a monitoring switch that makes things sound cool if you want!

EDIT2: My mistake again, I heard both of them working together...I can say that it was a GOOD experience. I too started on tape in the early 90's and switched to ADAT. Crane song gives you what you miss, I promise! Their plugin is probably awesome too, if you use PT-HD.
